Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park is a great area for a day-hike near Victoria and is located in the Metchosin region along the southern coast of Vancouver Island. Sitting Lady Falls is one of the main attractions in the park, offering scenic views of the waterfall as it cascades over the cliff and down into the canyon below.
The Beach Trail is the best route to follow as it passes the waterfall and continues downhill out toward the beach looking southeast towards Washington State and across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. From the main entrance, walk down the trail as it descends into the forest. Almost immediately, you begin to hear the rushing water of Sitting Lady Falls. At the first junction, go right onto the wooden overpass and enjoy several of the views of the waterfall. Continue along this trail as it descends down towards the lagoon and eventually crosses a wooden bridge.
After crossing the bridge, the trail is relatively flat and follows along the shore of Witty’s Lagoon, offering several viewpoints for birdwatchers. Belted Kingfisher, Great Blue Herons, Orange-crowned Warblers, and Dark-eyed Juncos are just a few of the many species that reside in the areas around the lagoon.
The trail crosses one last bridge before arriving at the beach area. The beach offers a wide view of Parry Bay that extends along the coastline of Vancouver Island, south to the mainland of Washington State, and east out along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. There are picnic tables and toilet facilities at the beach, making it a perfect day outing for families.
Enjoy a nice picnic or walk along the shoreline, taking in the scenic view and Pacific air. When you’re done, head back along the Beach Trail, up the hill, past Sitting Lady Falls, and returning to the parking lot where you began.
From downtown Victoria, take Douglas Street heading northbound and continue through the city until it becomes Highway #1. Take Exit #10 Sooke / Colwood and follow the Old Island Highway as it turns into Sooke Road. At the intersection with Metchosin Road, turn left and continue along the windy road for about 7km. The parking lot is located across from the Metchosin Golf and Country Club.
