Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park

Field lies at the centre of Yoho National Park, on the western side of the Canadian Rockies with towering Mt. Stephen keeping watch. The Visitor Centre in the park displays fascinating fossils from the Burgess Shale and you can view the Spiral Tunnels built to enable trains to traverse the steep mountain terrain. Look for the tunnel portals on the north side of the valley and watch a locomotive pass over railcars that are at the other end of the same train. The thrill of whitewater rafting is popular on the Kicking Horse River and you can also take family float trips in the calmer waters. An abundance of wildlife, hiking opportunities for every type of hiking experience, fishing in Emerald Lake for brook char, stunning skiing in the winter, plus much more are found throughout the park.

Location

Field is located on the Trans-Canada Hwy (Hwy 1) 58 km (36 mi) east of Golden, British Columbia and 28 km (17 mi) west on Hwy 1 from Lake Louise, Alberta.

A Step Back in Time

When British Columbia joined Canadian Confederation in 1871, it became necessary to create a national railway to unite both sides of the country. During the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s, Field was created as a resting spot for construction workers and as a site for potential investors.

Today, Field is a small community whose residents primarily work in Yoho National Park.
