Situated on Eagle River in the Shuswap area of British Columbia’s Thompson Okanagan region, the small community of Malakwa is a lovely place to stop on your travels in the area. A suspension bridge over the river provides snow-capped mountain views and a 4 km hiking loop at the end of the bridge make for a good place to stretch your legs. And with Mara and Shuswap Lakes nearby there are plenty of water activities to keep every member of the family happy. In the winter some of the very best snowmobiling can be found here.
Malakwa is located just off the Trans Canada Hwy 1 19 km (12 mi) east of Sicamous and 54 km (34 mi) west of Revelstoke.
Originally called Craigellachie the settlement changed its name in 1903 to Malakwa. Craigellachie was the location of the Last Spike driven into place November 7, 1885 that connected Canada’s east and west by train. Today, there is a tourist stop 5 minutes east of Malakwa commemorating this historic milestone.
