Kaleden

Kaleden is a small, picturesque town situated in British Columbia’s beautiful Okanagan Valley. This quiet community is known for its stunning views of Skaha Lake, an inviting lake that compliments the town’s vineyards and orchards. Visitors come to Kaleden to kick-back, relax, and immerse themselves in beautiful surroundings. With fine beaches and the Kettle Valley Rail Trail on its doorstep, it’s no wonder that this historic town gets so much attention.

The town is home to two historic buildings, the General Store, and neighbouring Hotel Kaleden. Although the hotel resembles a building that has been burned down, this is not the case. Financial troubles around the time of World War One saw the closing of the hotel. It was subsequently salvaged of all reusable material, leaving only a concrete shell.

Location

The town is located in the Thompson Okanagan between Penticton 13 km (8 mi) and Okanagan Falls 8km (5 mi) on Hwy 97.

A Step Back in Time

James Ritchie established the community of Kaleden in the early 1900s as an agricultural settlement for growing fruit. The famous “Kaleden Cots” got their beginning here. From the community beginnings as a small orcharding community, the town has evolved from fruit to vineyards and has become a bedroom community of Penticton.

Hotel Kaleden is one of the oldest buildings in the region, and during World War One it was gutted. All that remains of the site now is the concrete shell. The shell still stands today and can be seen overlooking the village.
